Shitakawara-yaki originated from a pottery kiln in the Tsugaru clan, a production area of everyday ceramics. Then the feudal lord felt the needs for more toys in the Tsugaru region, and ordered people to make clay dolls as secondary job during winter months. For the next two hundred years, a wide variety of dolls such as flutes shaped as doves and Chinese zodiac signs have been made. Yabase doll RabbitAkita City, Akita Prefecture
Yabase dolls are clay dolls that have been produced for about 200 years in Yabase district, Akita Prefecture. Although the production had recently been on the verge of abolition, a volunteer group formed by locals is founded to preserve the traditional dolls. Sendai papier mache RabbitSendai City, Miyagi Prefecture
Every year in Sendai, cute bobbing-head dolls of Chinese zodiac signs are made with the gentle texture of Japanese paper.
The 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac were used as a unit of time in ancient China so illiterate people could also know the time. This has been a subject of worship until the present days.

Miharu papier mache Round RabbitKoriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture
According to a source, production of papier mache dolls in Miharu was started about 300 years and a couple decades ago. Fushimi dolls had first come to the Miharu region, then people of Takashiba village started the production of papier mache dolls. Even now, the community known as "Takashiba Deko Mansion" continues to make various types of folk toys. Shirakawa Daruma has been produced for more than 300 years. It carries a lot of symbols of good-luck, cranes for the eyebrows, turtles for the beards, pine and plums for the sideburns, and bamboo for the chin beard. This Kyo clay bell is a lucky charm that was originally created from a Kyoto dialect. Rabbits have been said to "leap" as they hop around and collect information to protect oneself as they have long ears. They have been cherished as a symbol of success and prosperity of businesses. In this region, there is a tradition to give baby boys papier mache tiger dolls wishing for their healthy growth. In this studio as well, production of papier mache was started about 60 years ago, and now not only tiger dolls but also dolls of all 12 chinese zodiac signs are being produced. Hikiyama clay doll Yoshitsune's HelmetKaratsu City, Saga prefecture
During the annual festival "Karatsu-kunchi" in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, floats go around the city. The floats are made in each town spending a big budget, competing with each other. They imply the spirit and pride of working class people of Karatsu against the rich, upper class. There are 14 floats from red lion to treasure boat.
This hand-made clay doll is modelled after those traditional, extraordinary floats as a folk doll of Karatsu.

Piggybank DarumaTakeo City, Saga Prefecture
In 1882, Kamejiro Harada started as an apprentice under Kiyoshige Fujiwara, a craftsman of Hakata dolls. After practicing everywhere in Kyushu, he finally arrived in Yoshidayama, Ureshino Town. He then started making Yumino dolls to pay gratitude to a Sake producer in Yumino who took care of him earlier.
